MACC Girls Club

It has been a delight to observe the identity project Juliana has led the MACC Girls Club on over the past 5 weeks. Having started with blind contour drawings to a 3-d representation brought a depth to their investigation. The girls had a variety of materials to explore with tradtional form of making, in order to represent their self. They are now completing Artist Statements that reveal further - who they are- watch for these on display, at Sunset Community Centre- 6810 Main Street.

MACC Girls Club

This after school youth program is for girls, girls, girls! This year we are happy to announce that the continued partnership with South Asian Family Association (SAFA) will provide funding to enhance this program with weekly guest visiting artists!

MACC Girls Club will work with Something Collective our resident artists who bring media arts, doll-making, puppetry, digital storytelling and the magic of words to this after school program. In addition, participants will explore recycled book making, drawing, drum beats, hip hop and more!

SAFA is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit association with a mission to promote and enhance family values while embracing Canadian Culture and maintaining South Asian Culture and identity. SAFA aims to create opportunities for cross-cultural understanding.

Reception for Here & There

On Wednesday, January 11, 2012 we were delighted to host a community celebration honouring the completion of a 2 year process that resulted in the community public art project, Here & There. Pictured here is John Thomas (L) and Walter Schultz (R) who were both instrumental in getting the original and current centres constructed. In the case of John Thomas, it was his father, Stan Thomas- then president of the Sunset Memorial Centre who led a campaign to raise the necessary funding to build the original centre. Walter Schultz, community member and past president of the current Sunset Community Centre engaged politicians on a municipal, provincial and federal level to gain the necessary funding to get this centre built. Both of these stories were captured by digital storyteller Lisa Nielsen that now reside on a flatscreen embedded into the heritage wall you see behind Mr. Thomas and Mr. Schultz

South Vancouver Community Space Inventory

The South Vancouver Community Space Inventory website is launched!

This website provides residents and organizations in South Vancouver access to available community spaces. These businesses, organizations and locations have generously shared their available rooms, spaces and facilities for use. Developed through the Sunset Community Literacy Plan, one of its goals is "to identify and enhance ways for residents and service providers to have access to community spaces". The inventory highlights currently available spaces and also finds new unknown spaces. It is our aim that residents and service providers will have improved access to community space. This website is maintained through the Sunset Community Literacy Plan. Please contact the Literacy Outreach Coordinator, Chelan Wallace at 604-324-6212 for more information.

Mosaic is up! Faces of our Community

The mosaic is up!
Faces of our Community was created in 2008 with community members in the Sunset neighbourhood. The majority of these mosaics are embedded into the sidewalk on Fraser Street. Moberly ws fortunate to have this one land on the exterior wall, marking this process of community collaboration.
